Saving lives and fostering independence

Telemedicine for the elderly provides the priceless gift of preserved independence – but to ensure adoption, the products must take their unique needs and abilities into account.

The challenge

Create a healthtech app that will empower the elderly by giving them more control over their health and independence that takes into account their unique needs and abilities.

The solution

The first step in creating any product is to start where your users are and work from there. In this case, the product’s elderly users had lived most of their lives without mobile technology, and we realized that it wouldn’t be reasonable to expect them to adapt overnight.

Since they were used to working things out with another person and appreciated human interaction, we decided to get them comfortable with the app by leading them through with an initial call from customer support. This provides a friendly introduction to the support team and sets the foundation for them to reach out for assistance in the future.

UI design for smooth interactions

When creating the UI, we paid special attention to ensure a great experience for everybody. This included optimizing the user interface by creating large interactive elements and reducing the number of input fields so as to not overwhelm the users, as well as using clear fonts and contrasting colors for readability.

We also made sure that the customer support number is always visible so that the users can easily call for help. When combined with a simplified user interface, this flow results in quicker access to care and fewer technical issues.

The impact

The app gives healthcare providers and loved ones an overview of a patient’s wellness while allowing them to maintain their independence by providing an overview of health trends and data, quick access to healthcare professionals, automatic fall detection, and a panic button–in a stylish, easy-to-use, and non-invasive form.

Ensuring that patients feel comfortable using this life-changing technology is essential, even if it means creating an experience that is not entirely digitally immersive.
